SAFETY ACT Data Retention Bill Introduced Print E-mail
A bill introduced February 13th by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) would expand data retention requirements for Internet service providers (ISPs). Requiring ISPs to retain data longer would help law enforcement obtain subscriber information in child exploitation investigations.

Virginia ICACs Make Case to Lawmakers Print E-mail

Virginia's two Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task forces are making their best case to lawmakers, and their emphasis is on child rescue.

Last year the Virginia legislature appropriated $1.5 million to the state's two ICACs as part of "Alicia's Law." The law was named for Alicia Kozakiewicz, the young woman who was kidnapped at age 13 by an Internet predator and held captive in Virginia. Alicia's message to the Virginia legislature was simple and effective: investigating child pornography trafficking leads to the door of child victims.

Now a new Obama memorandum sheds some light on what the new president has in mind. The memo to agency heads lays out three broad principles for openness in government, saying government should be transparent, participatory and collaborative.

Backlogs at FBI cybercrime labs are impeding hundreds of investigations into online child exploitation and child pornography. The report shows the FBI forensic units to be overwhelmed, despite efforts to process requests as quickly as possible.
