| What Teamwork Can Do...Two Sisters Rescued |

A beer can, a pair of spectacles and dedicated teamwork led to the rescue of two sisters, ages 4 and 6, from further sexual abuse… and the filming of it.
The story comes from the FBI archives and refers to a 2007 compilation of disturbing images that surfaced and were noticed by the Royal Canadian Mountain Police. Toronto Police Services then analyzed the images that revealed a beer can in the background. Only a few northeastern states manufactured that brand of beer. Concurrently, but unknowingly, Maine state and law enforcement were studying the same images and learned that one of the sisters wore distinctive eyeglasses. Thus began the real teamwork of the multi-agency investigations. The manufacturer and model number of the glasses, combined with the beer manufacturer information and painstaking diligence, led agents to a Maryland ophthalmologist in 2008. The doctor contacted FBI agents to say that the victim was indeed his patient and she'd been in his office that very morning.
Within hours, a surveillance team had mobilized and a search warrant was secured. A forensic child interviewer, victim assistance rep, cyber squad members and evidence response team members gathered on the victims' doorstep. Help had finally arrived. A few months later, the two predators were sentenced to 36 and 45 years in prison. FBI Agent Michael Sabric responded that it was "a great example of local, state, and federal authorities working together toward a common goal. Every piece of information along the way was critical..." Special Agent Rachel Corn added, "This is the outcome you always hope for...." |
